Who This Is Written For

This executive summary is written for university administrators, department chairs, research office staff, IRB coordinators, and faculty who need a clear, practical understanding of how Voice Up™ Publishing Inc. manages academic access to its anonymized research dataset.

It describes the four documents in the access framework, who uses each one, when to use it, and what obligations it creates for the university and its faculty and students.

This document does not replace any of the four access documents. It is a guide for understanding how they work together and who at the university is responsible for each step.

Researcher-Facing Dataset Introduction

Before requesting access, researchers should review the full dataset documentation — instruments, limitations, and research entry points.

View Dataset Introduction
Background

What the Dataset Is

The Voice Up™ Anonymized Program Participation Dataset is a de-identified record of voluntary participation in Voice Up™ Publishing Inc.'s program — a free, fully remote initiative that connected 2,115+ people from 42 countries to purpose-driven learning between November 2024 and June 2026. No one was paid to participate. No one was required to follow a prescribed path.

The dataset contains 19 sheets across nine participant-facing instruments and three analytical overlays. Instruments include purpose planning documents, talent inventories, wellbeing assessments, weekly work logs with day-level detail, leadership reflections, incubator application records, and a registry of 27 externally verified real-world outcomes. All personally identifying information — names, emails, addresses, phone numbers — has been removed.

Critical Distinction for Universities

This dataset was collected as organizational program operations data, not as a research study. It was not originally collected under a research IRB. When a faculty member or student uses this data for research, that use is when IRB requirements apply — at the university's end, not at the time of original collection. There is no prior research IRB approval to cite. The university's own IRB application is the first research use.

Access Framework

The Four Documents

Organized into three tiers. The tier determines the level of formality, the scope of permitted use, and the obligations created for the university.

Tier 1Course & Classroom Use

Who Uses It

Faculty member or instructor

When to Use

When a faculty member wants to use the dataset in a course, seminar, or classroom setting

Key Obligations

Faculty agrees to limit use to educational purposes, not publish findings as research without a separate agreement, and brief students on anonymization ethics.

Who Uses It

Each enrolled student using the data

When to Use

Signed by each student at the start of a course using the dataset

Key Obligations

Student agrees to non-disclosure of raw records, ethical handling, and that analyses remain within the course context unless separately authorized.

Tier 2Individual & Faculty Research

Who Uses It

Graduate student, doctoral candidate, or independent faculty researcher

When to Use

When an individual researcher intends to analyze the dataset for publication, dissertation, or formal study

Key Obligations

Requires IRB approval from home institution, citation of Voice Up™ Publishing Inc. as source, encrypted storage, and reporting of publications.

Tier 3Institutional Partnerships

Who Uses It

University research office, department chair, or dean's office

When to Use

When a university wants to establish a standing, multi-faculty or multi-student access pathway

Key Obligations

University agrees to serve as the responsible institutional party for all access granted under the MOU, maintain records of users, and notify Voice Up™ Publishing Inc. of any compliance issue.

University Obligations

Division of Responsibility

Voice Up™ Publishing Inc. is the data provider. The university is the receiving party.

What the University Is Responsible For

  • Obtain IRB approval for any use classified as human subjects research under federal guidelines

  • Ensure all faculty and students who access data sign the appropriate agreement before receiving any records

  • Maintain secure, encrypted storage of any downloaded data files

  • Cite Voice Up™ Publishing Inc. as the data source in any publication, presentation, or report

  • Notify Voice Up™ Publishing Inc. if a publication, thesis, or dissertation is submitted using this data

  • Ensure data is not shared beyond authorized users or uploaded to public repositories

What Voice Up™ Publishing Inc. Is Responsible For

  • Provide the anonymized dataset in a standardized format upon execution of the appropriate agreement

  • Respond to access requests within 1–2 business days of receiving a complete submission

  • Maintain a current data dictionary and instrument documentation for each dataset version

  • Answer IRB-related questions about the nature of original data collection

  • Keep the access framework documents current and notify partners of material changes

  • Honor all confidentiality obligations to original program participants

For IRB Staff

IRB Quick Guide

Written specifically for IRB coordinators and research compliance staff reviewing applications from faculty and students using this dataset.

Key Facts for IRB Review

  • The dataset is fully de-identified — all names, emails, addresses, and phone numbers have been removed.

  • Original data was collected as organizational program operations data, not as a research study. There is no prior research IRB to cite.

  • IRB requirements apply at the point of research use — at the university, not at the time of original collection.

  • In most cases, use of this anonymized dataset qualifies for exempt status under 45 CFR 46.104(d)(4). The university's IRB office makes that determination.

  • Voice Up™ Publishing Inc. can provide a data dictionary, description of collection procedures, anonymization methodology, and written confirmation that no re-identification keys exist.

  • The dataset spans 2,115+ voluntary, unpaid participants across 42 countries and 347 institutions — November 2024 through June 2026.

Common IRB Questions

Was this data collected under a research IRB?

No. The Voice Up™ dataset was collected as organizational program operations data, not as a research study. There is no prior research IRB approval to cite. The university's own IRB application is the first research use.

Does that mean it cannot be used for research?

No. It means IRB requirements apply at the point of research use — which is at the university. When a faculty member or student analyzes this data for research purposes, they must obtain IRB approval from their home institution.

What category of IRB review applies?

In most cases, use of this anonymized, de-identified dataset will qualify for exempt status under 45 CFR 46.104(d)(4). However, the university's IRB office makes that determination — not Voice Up™ Publishing Inc.

What documentation can Voice Up™ Publishing Inc. provide to support an IRB application?

We can provide: a data dictionary, a description of original collection procedures, the anonymization methodology, and confirmation that no re-identification keys exist. Contact info@appliedpurpose.life.

Common Questions

Questions from Universities

Can a doctoral student use this data for a dissertation?

Yes. The student uses Document 3. Their dissertation chair or advisor should also be aware of the agreement terms. The student's home institution must provide IRB clearance.

Can multiple faculty from the same university each get individual access?

Yes. However, if three or more faculty from the same institution are seeking access, we recommend discussing an MOU, which creates a more efficient pathway and clearer institutional accountability.

Are there restrictions on what can be published?

There are no restrictions on findings. Researchers may publish whatever the data supports. The only requirements are proper citation of Voice Up™ Publishing Inc. as the data source and notification upon publication.

Does the MOU cost anything?

No. The MOU is a governance document, not a financial instrument. It creates accountability and a streamlined access pathway — nothing more.

What if a student graduates and wants to continue the research?

The student must execute a new Document 3 as an independent researcher. Course-use agreements and student acknowledgments expire with the course enrollment.

Ready to Request Class-Level Access?

Submit your Class-Level Data Access Request Form directly online. Covers all Parts A through F.

Start Request Form

Voice Up™ Publishing Inc. has executed formal Memoranda of Understanding with three university partners. Faculty and administrators at these institutions should contact both their departmental MOU liaison and Voice Up™ Publishing Inc. before initiating a data access request, as existing partnership terms may affect or streamline the access process.

Universities interested in establishing a formal MOU should contact info@appliedpurpose.life. An MOU does not replace individual data access agreements but may establish a streamlined approval pathway for faculty within the partnering institution.
